Aboaca Southern Western Eastern Hemisphere
  • El-Azatlan is roughly equivalent in area & location to modern-day Earth’s African Mediterranean coast, through the Horn of Africa in the east, all of the Arabian Peninsula, and Asia Minor. Its borders encompass approximately 4.855 million square miles. Further, it integrates the cultures of all said areas, a population of over 100 million [over 75% are humans or half-humans]. Elements from Carthage, Babylonia, and Persia are present; more dominant are Egyptian [New Kingdom], the Byzantine Empire, and the Ottoman Empire.
  • More specifically, worship of the Pharonic Pantheon is the state religion, and the Caliph is purported to be a direct descendant of the deities. Worship of other pantheons is not tolerated within the central province [approximately modern-day Egypt]. Other pantheons are grudgingly tolerated as the distance from the throne in the Holy City increases.
  • The formal seat of power is the Holy City of Ra, located in the delta of the Haya River, on the coast of the Inner Sea.
  • The Caliph [supreme ruler and claimant of divine mandate] is selected by a council of the various influential families, all of which claim deific origin. Rule is typically hereditary, unless the Caliph dies without a legitimate heir or naming a successor. Caliphs are almost exclusively male humans. The positioning within the court/alliances formed & broken/assassinations/etc. can be quite contentious when such a vacuum occurs. Rivalries between the various influential families span multiple centuries. An actual Pharaoh rules only when one of the deities manifests an avatar to claim the throne. Caliphs that refuse to step aside, claiming the avatar is not legitimate, are slain immediately by the avatar as a demonstration of its divine will. Pharaohs are typically manifestations of Re-Horakhty, but other deities’ avatars have held the throne.
  • Below the influential families, politics are very Byzantine: convoluted connections, rules, customs, and methods control resource distribution and provincial rule. Justice can be swift and decisive, dispensed summarily without a trial; or a very formal affair that takes months. Local customs and politics have been known to supersede the rule of the Caliph. When news of these events makes its way back to the Holy City, the Caliph typically personally leads a military expedition to impose his will on the miscreant locals. Caliphs that consistently fail to maintain lawful rule will be deposed by an avatar.
  • El-Azatlan dates its origins to over 6000 years prior to the present day, waxing and waning over the centuries. Its current borders have remained mainly static for approximately 600 years [its last major expansion came during the decline of the Old Empire of the Österreichische.] The current royal family has ruled for ~220 years; the most recent Pharaoh’s rule was ~260-220 years ago. The current Caliph is Khaen-suas IX, and he has held the throne for 32 years.
